Remembering LSA Honorary Member: Professor Robert A. Stebbins (1938–2024)
news / May 11, 2026
The academic world and the global leisure studies community mourn the loss of Professor Robert A. Stebbins, a towering figure in sociology whose work fundamentally redefined our understanding of how humans find meaning, identity, and purpose outside of the workplace.
He was the primary architect of the Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP), a theoretical framework that bridged the gap between sociology, psychology, and everyday human experience.
He leaves behind a world that views its “free time” differently because of him. He gave us the vocabulary to value our hobbies, our volunteerism, and our amateur pursuits not as distractions from “real life,” but as the very things that make life worth living.
His legacy continues through the thousands of students he taught, the researchers who build upon his framework, and every person who finds deep, serious joy in a personal passion.
Explore his legacy through the Serious Leisure Perspective Digital Library (www.seriousleisure.net) that includes access to his prolific body of work.
Thank you, Bob.
